00100 Proposal for the Stanford Computer Music Project
00110
00150 John M. Chowning

00205
00210
00300	The Department of Music, ten years ago, began its support of
00400	computer music at a time when many university music departments
00500	considered such work to be anti-humanistic and/or trivial. We
00600	developed (and were the first) a self-contained system for
00700	direct digital synthesis using computers supported by powerful
00800	synthesis and composition programs. The fact that we have
00900	been supplying in recent years a growing number of universities
01000	with our programs and special knowledge is a powerful testament
01100	to the initial foresight of the Stanford Music Department.
01200
01300	The activity at the Stanford Computer Music Project (SCMP) is
01400	vigorous and productive. The current research areas and the
01500	personnel are
01600
01700 1. Music Editing - L. Smith
01800 2. Frequency Modulation Synthesis - J. Chowning
01900 3. Reverberation and Spatial Cues - L. Rush
02000 4. Spectral Analysis and Perception - J. Grey, J.A. Moorer
02100 5. System Hardware and Programming - J.A. Moorer
02200
02300 Loren Rush is a composer who has a long-standing
02400	involvement with SCMP, predating his doctorate at Stanford.
02500	His critical hearing and careful research are of obvious benefit.
02600
02700 John Grey is a doctoral candidate in Psychology whose
02800	disertation promises to be major contribution in psychoacoustics.
02900
03000 J.A. Moorer is a doctoral candidate in Computer Science
03100	whose scientific training and deep interest in music and acoustics
03200	havg been of enormous help to us.
03300
03400	Together, this is a group of people having exceptional skills and
03500	dedication would constitute an ideal staff for SCMP.
03600
03700
03800 Funding
03900	The Music Department cannot by itself support SCMP. In view of
04000	the nature of our work, therefore, NSF or NIMH seem to be
04100	attractive possibilities for support. We are now putting together
04200	a large proposal for support over a two year period for the
04300	above personnel and for a computer and/or special purpose
04400	processor. With the help of the department we should also
04500	contact the large foundations.
04600
04700
04800 Teaching
04900	Within the competence of SCMP as proposed is a number of courses
05000	and seminars, some of which could be offered in the general
05100	music curriculum and others as seminars for more specialized
05200	interest in electronic music and acoustics.
05300 General Courses-
05400 Acoustics - Grey, Chowning
05500 Psychoacoustics - Grey
05600 Specialized Seminars-
05700 Music Compiler and Instrument Design - Rush,Chowning
05800 Use of Score - Smith
05900 Additive Synthesis - Grey
06000 FM Synthesis - Rush, Chowning
06100 Mathematics - Moorer
06200 Digital Processing - Moorer
06300 Reverberation and Spatial Programs - Rush
06400
06500
06600 Organization
06700	For the purposes of research, teaching, and fund-raising SCMP
06800	should have some degree of formal organization. I propose the
06900	following:
06950
07000 Principle Investigator - Smith
07100 and Faculty Advisor
07200
07300 Co-directors - Chowning, Rush
07400
07500 Research Associates - Grey, Moorer
07600
07610	I understand from L. Smith that he does not have the time to
07620	assume primary responsibility for writing proposals and teaching
07630	the computer courses.
07700	In view of the fact that I will be away after March, the
07800	co-directorship has the advantage of providing Rush an official
07900	position from which he can 'push' proposals and over-see the
08000	general activities of the project. He should also teach the
08100	computer synthesis courses while I am away. It seems to me
08200	important that the momentum of that program be maintained.5
08300
08400	Assuming that we are able to find support all of the positions
08500	except for L. Smith would be research associates where the
08600	department would be responsable for 1/2 of one position (Rush
08700	until my return).
08800
08900
09000 Association with IRCAM
09100	I would propose to Boulez while I am in Europe that a time-sharing
09200	arrangement be worked out with his Institute de Recherche et
09300	Coordination Acoustique Musicale (IRCAM), where some faculty and
09400	staff of SCMP exchange locations with some staff of IRCAM. From
09500	the point of view of Boulez it should be attractive since he will
09600	have initial need of this kind of 'ventilation'. From Stanford's position
09700	it would allow a member of the project to work at IRCAM for a limited
09800	period in a siggnificantly different environment. I would suggest that
09900	such exchanges include Stanford graduate students as well.
